Inside the mind of an ice swimmer

People ask what it feels like to swim in cold water.  Here’s a link to a blog post written on Christmas Eve 2012 by Paul Duffield who the day before had swum an ice mile.  His swim, in 5degC water lasted 38 minutes and I can only manage about 15-20 in those temperatures so what I experience isn’t quite the same, but it’s a great piece.

Enjoy it!

  1. Thanks for sharing my article. It was a great day for everybody involved.
here’s a link to t a video of the swim which has now been recognised as Canada’s first official ice swim :

An ice swim is as much a mental challenge as a physical one, the physical of course being the pain of the cold. Mentally you have to be totally prepared to overcome this and stay totally relaxed during the swim. I have written many articles about ice swimming and in particular my preparations for not only the Dec 23rd swim but also a second ice mile swim I have planned in the next few weeks.

I must add the ice swimming is a lot of fun but is not for the faint hearted.

Hypothermia can be lethal and any cold water swimming should only be done with adequate supervision. I have support kayakers, trained life guards and medical supervision during my swims.
